Well Aberdeen Jazz festival is over for another year, I was hugely privileged to be involved in a number of projects playing with some fantastic musicians, and met loads of really nice people.
The highlight was of course playing in the Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra alongside Jacqui Dankworth, Helena Kay, Richard Ingham, the specially formed Ellington Choir, and the Aberdeen University Big Band performing Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concert. Conducted by Pauline Black, we filled St Machar Cathedral to capacity in what was a truly memorable gig, definitely one to be remembered.
Also loved playing a funky set with my trio JCB (Andy James, Bryan Chalmers, Colin Black), it’s always great playing with these guys, and having the opportunity to perform some of our original material, definitely something I don’t do enough of. We were also joined by special guest Helena Kay on tenor for a set of choice jazz standards, and what an amazing player she is.
The icing on the cake of this perfect week was fitting in a late sunday night gig with the amazing Copper Cats alongside Alison Affleck and Colin Steele, playing 1930’s swing, not strictly part of the festival, but hugely enjoyable.
Roll on 2018!
